Do Veneers Cause Tooth Sensitivity?
September 11, 2026

Porcelain veneers can transform a smile by improving the appearance of teeth that are discolored, chipped, uneven, or worn. But if you’re considering this cosmetic treatment, you may have one important question: Will getting veneers make your teeth sensitive?
It’s a reasonable concern! Veneers are designed to look and feel natural, but the preparation process can temporarily affect how your teeth respond to hot, cold, and other sensations. The good news is that sensitivity doesn’t happen to everyone, and when it does, it’s often temporary.
Why Can Veneers Cause Tooth Sensitivity?
To understand why sensitivity may occur, it helps to know how porcelain veneers are placed. Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth. To create room for them and achieve a natural-looking fit, your dentist typically removes a small amount of enamel.
Enamel is the hard outer layer that protects your teeth from temperature changes and other external stimuli. When a small amount is removed, the underlying dentin may become more responsive to hot, cold, or pressure. This can lead to temporary sensitivity during the treatment process.
Your teeth may also feel sensitive after the preparation appointment or once your permanent veneers are placed. However, the experience varies from person to person. Your existing dental health, the amount of enamel removed, and your individual response to treatment can all play a role.
How Long Does Sensitivity After Veneers Last?
Some patients experience mild sensitivity for a few days after veneer placement, while others may notice it for a few weeks as their teeth adjust. You might feel a brief twinge when drinking something cold or eating hot foods, for example.
As your teeth settle after treatment, this discomfort should gradually improve. Your dentist may recommend using toothpaste formulated for sensitive teeth and temporarily avoiding foods or drinks that trigger discomfort.
It’s important to remember that persistent or worsening sensitivity isn’t something you should simply wait out. If discomfort lasts longer than expected, becomes severe, or interferes with eating and drinking, schedule a dental appointment. Your dentist can evaluate the cause and determine whether additional treatment is necessary.
Can You Prevent Sensitivity From Veneers?
Although sensitivity can’t always be prevented, a few steps may help make your experience more comfortable.
First, address existing dental concerns before beginning cosmetic treatment. Cavities, gum disease, and preexisting sensitivity may need attention before veneers are placed. Discussing these issues with your dentist helps ensure your teeth are ready for treatment.
After your procedure, follow your dentist’s care instructions and maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush gently with fluoride toothpaste, and avoid brushing too aggressively along the gumline.
You may also want to limit very hot, cold, or acidic foods and drinks if they trigger discomfort. If you grind or clench your teeth, ask your dentist whether a nightguard would be beneficial for protecting your restorations.
When Should You Contact Your Dentist?
Mild, short-lived sensitivity can be part of the adjustment process, but sharp pain, persistent discomfort, pain when biting down, or sensitivity that gets worse deserves attention. These symptoms may indicate an issue with the tooth, the veneer, or your bite that needs to be evaluated.
Don’t hesitate to reach out if something doesn’t feel right. Prompt evaluation can help identify the problem and protect your oral health.
With careful planning and appropriate aftercare, veneers can enhance your smile while keeping comfort a priority.
